What could be better than driving with your friends to a classically decorated roller skating rink, getting a free skate rental, and hanging out for hours under flashing lights and energetic music? I’ll tell you: falling at least once while you do it. Unless you’re a pro skater, don’t lie – you definitely fell (or maybe it was just me). Falling is a right of skating passage, in my opinion. But anyway, to finish off the Pledge Drive festivities before Pledge-a-thon, WIUX hosted a Skate and Donate night at Western Skateland last Thursday.
In order to support the Pledge Drive initiative, one dollar from every WIUX member’s entry purchase went to the station. With the amount of people that showed up and showed out, those dollars will go a long way! The support for WIUX was on full display – based on my estimates, I’d guess that 40-50 members skated at the beginning of the night when I was there. It was wonderful to see. Everyone gleefully zoomed in circles or chatted along the wall, enjoying the vibes and the company. The rink was packed and thrilling and risky – it was so much fun.
After the event, I chatted with a fellow WIUX member to find out what her favorite part of the event was after some reflection. As she explained, “I loved skating and also jamming out to good pop music with the coolest people ever. We definitely showed up and showed out with our outfits and brought good vibes!” That quote pretty much sums up the evening perfectly – it was a night of jamming to music, hanging out with the coolest people, and improving (or not) our skating skills. It was classic, pure fun. The evening was nostalgic, and all I witnessed from the crowd was smiles, even when we fell.
Skate and Donate concluded the week of not-Pledge-a-thon Pledge Drive events with a bang. There was no better activity to bring together the WIUX community for a night of challenges and fun. For all readers who went, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did! Every donation from that evening counts, and I, as a member of WIUX, am grateful for everyone who supports our organization. Stay tuned for more Pledge Drive coverage soon!
