In a study at China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in the Sichuan Province scientists said that they have decoded the language of Pandas, or at least have made large steps. This study was conducted over the last 5 years. According to TechTimes, the scientists were able to detect 13 different vocalizations including baby pandas making "wow-wow" sounds when they are unhappy and male giant pandas making sheep like "baa" sounds when they are trying to mate.
Zhang Hemin, head of the center, said to the Xinhua news agency, "Our researchers were so confused when we began the project that they wondered if they were studying a panda, a bird, a dog, or a sheep. [But] If we can understand their language, it will help us protect the animal, especially in the wild."
The center is looking to develop high tech voice recognition technology, using these vocalizations, to help understand what the pandas are saying to each other. The implications of this technology could be incredibly beneficial for wildlife sanctuaries for the Giant Pandas and zoos that host these large mammals alike. It could help these organizations provide better care for the animals and help encourage breeding, which the mammals are notoriously finicky about.
