Planet Natives - Planet Natives EP
Album artwork: Juliet Johnson
Local Bloomington artists Planet Natives released their first EP titled the Planet Natives EP, at the beginning of this June. The EP includes elements of cosmic jazz, psych, atomospheric, and hip-hop. It is quite different than most Bloomington music projects in that it offers a fresh take on electronic jazz music, which, to my knowledge, has not been properly represented in the Bloomington music community.
Many of the titles of the tracks are directly reflective of the songs mood. Track 4, Tribe Vibe, pays homage to the laid back rhymes and feel of the celebrated hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest. Track 5, Flying Lo, pulls influence from the experimental electronic artist Flying Lotus.
I got a hold of Quinton Rief, co-founder of Planet Natives, to ask him a few questions about the EP and the music project:
MIKE HIGGINS: Who are the members of Planet Natives? Who did the production work?
QUINTON RIEF: Planet Natives is the brainchild of Kaila and I. It originally started as a guitar and violin duo, then changed to synth and guitar, then to a full jazz/soul band, and now it is an electronicy jazzy psychedelic project. I did production on all of the tracks. Kaila helped produce on Planetarium and Will Chen mastered all of the tracks.
MH: What influences did you draw on for this record?
QR: A huge influence on my production is Flying Lotus and Thundercat. I have been listening to a lot of Thundercat's new album Drunk recently and I find myself going back to it for inspiration. That's actually what lead me to sampling my housemate's cat on the track Flying Lo and also the reason I titled the track the way I did.
MH: How does Bloomington assist with your creative abilities for your music project? Are you influenced by the local music scene? How would you describe the community of music in Bloomington?
QR: As far as the Bloomington music scene I feel that I am not necessarily influenced by it or even really a part of it. Most of the music that is coming out of Bloomington is SoundCloud rock type stuff, which is cool, but not really what I am into. The features that are on this project are not people I have met through the Bloomington "scene" but friends of mine that I have met on terms other than music. Honestly I was pretty discouraged by how many Bloomington music people iced me out when I asked to collaborate with them, but it's whatever.
MH: Where would you like to take this project in the future: I.e. Shows? Future music releases? Experimenting with new sounds?
QR: A common thing I hear from people who listen to my music is that they could picture it being in a movie, so I think collaborating with film makers would be a really fun challenge to take on in the future. The music I have been making since I dropped the project has been heavily sample based and really influenced by 9th wonder. It's an interesting way to make music and I am excited to experiment more with it.
MH: Anything else you want people to know about this record and Planet Natives?
QR: I worked really hard on this project and while there may be a few kinda weak tracks, I am really proud of the final product.

Interview with Brendan from Furnsss:
Mike Higgins: What brings Furnsss to Bloomington? Tell me about your tour.
Brendan: A few bands we're friends with recommended we stop in Bloomington. The tour is a 6 week tour of the United States with our friends Bread Pilot.
Mike: Tell me about the origin of Furnsss? What artists/people have inspired you to make music?
Brendan: Furnsss started when I was in middle school, funny enough. Seven years later and a few name changes and style changes we're still operating. I guess you could call it my child. Some artists that have inspired me include (but are not limited to) The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Pavement, Deerhunter, LVL UP, and Dinosaur Jr.
Mike: What is your opinion on the book Where The Red Fern Grows?
Brendan: Beautiful & Classic.
Mike: What's up for Furnsss after the tour ends?
Brendan: Chill and hopefully do SXSW come spring time.
Later that night Furnsss and Bread Pilot played a very rocking show in a local Bloomington basement. They were well accepted by the Bloomington music scene.

A Mineral Love – Bibio
[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="745"] A Mineral Love - Released 4/1/2016[/caption]
5/7 stars
Favorite Tracks: Raxeira and C’est La Vie
I walked out of the library today to find myself in the pouring rain. Normally I’d be a little upset, but it didn’t seem to bother me today. I threw in my earbuds to listen to Bibio’s 2015 release Fi, I thought it would fit my current mood. To my surprise I saw that A Mineral Love had recently been released on April 1. I started to listen to it and the first track “Petals” already had me hooked. Petals is a really cool track because it opens with a very similar guitar tone to Bibio’s Ambivalence Avenue (2011). Other tracks on A Mineral Love that play off the 2009 Bibio style are “Raxeira”,”C’est La Vie”, and “Wren Tails”. I am very happy Bibio is continuing to use the recording style of Fi and Ambivalence Avenue, I loved those albums very much, they bring me sentimental feelings.
Although there are many ties to Fi and Ambivalence Avenue, this record shows a side of Bibio that hasn’t really been previously exposed. I am talking about the elements of funk and RnB that can be seen in tracks like “Feeling” or the promotion single he released for this album, “Town & Country”. These tracks are a new venture for Bibio; I would compare the sound to Jerry Paper or Homeshake, and these artists write easy going indie pop tunes with a layer of funk built underneath them.
A few other fun features of this album include Gotye on the track “The Way You Talk”, Oliver St. Louis on “Why So Serious?”, and Wax Stag on “Gasoline & Mirrors”. To my understanding, this is one of the first times Bibio has featured other artists on one of his albums. These artists add new hypnotic twists to his tracks that haven’t really been seen before in Bibio’s music.
Overall, I think the album has a similar track list to Bibio’s 2013 release of Silver Wilkinson. They are similar because the songs don’t necessarily all follow the same theme. You have some hip-hop here, ambient songs over there, and lo-fi guitar noise scattered all throughout the album. Bibio seems to always be criticized the most for lacking in a general album theme. It has never really bothered me, but I do think a good album should have a clear concise sound. In the end though, A Mineral Love is a good record. I recommend the album to anyone who is looking experience a warm feeling in their heart.

The Magazine
“In the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, rock n roll was a religion. It meant so much more than just the songs, it meant a group of people who could get together and change something... I want my music to be like that.” - Ty Segall Drone Magazine
Ty Segall has often been credited with being one of the front runners of lo-fi Garage Rock. He is an artist who looks to unite jocks, weirdos, goths, punks, nerds, and everyone else in between. He continues to “rock thy socks off” record after record and always with a new wacky twist. The new twist for this record is “emotional mugging”. To get a better grasp on what emotional mugging is, here is Ty Segall with the answer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3aklEgwjF8
Now wasn’t that helpful?
Emotional Mugger, released via Drag City Records, is Segall’s ninth album. The record was produced by Segall along with F. Bermudez. There are also appearances from Mikal Cronin and King Tuff on some of the tracks.
Emotional Mugger is a super hot record with tons of fuzz and tons of fun. The album centers around a darker theme, which can be noticed immediately on the album cover which contains a porcelain doll with lifeless eyes with a background of tv fuzz. Also on the album cover is the quote “NO MAN IS GOOD THREE TIMES” which is a political reference to when FDR was running for his third term. What is Segall saying by having this on the cover of his new record? Maybe it’s a reference to this being another great album next to Lemons (2009) and Melted (2010).
Anthony Fantana from The Needle Drop says “I kind of feel like, in a way, that I was drugged before putting this album on in the way in the guitars squak and how they fuzz out.”
The record opens with the track “Squealer” which is very true to it’s name. “Squealer” squeals a high pitched guitar melody that remains consistent throughout the album. Following the title track is my favorite song on this album “California Hills”. I love this tune because it catches the listener's attention with the constant time built into the structure of the song. You can also move your whole body to it. Fast-forward to the end of Side 1 with the song “Diversion.” In this track Segall plays a heavy guitar while repeating the lyrics “Diversion, diversion, I’m back I’m back I’m back.” These lyrics could be a reference to Segall coming back with new sound.
Where side 1 will satisfy long-term Segall fans, side 2 shows everyone a new droney electric side with “Baby Big Man.”
Halfway through the b-side is “Candy Sam”. This track is arguably the best on the album. It was the first single Segall released before releasing the whole record. “Candy Sam” has a very unique vocal track where Segall sings in a high pitched voice while also layering the track with a low groan as well. The lyrics clear up our questions about the plastic dolls scattered throughout the album art: “Pick me up, I am done, candy's gone, no more fun high and dry, I am done, candy sam, Give us some”
Emotional Mugger ends on a pretty dark note with “The Magazine.” Segall has a whiney vocals plus a heavy drone-y bass on the tune. The song is relatively short, and ends with a sort of fizzling out which sounds like a plane crashing to the ground. In my opinion, I don’t think this was the best track to end the album with. I can understand how artists will strategically place their songs throughout the album but I think what have really set this album apart is if “Candy Sam” was the final track. However, I still loved the album, I even went ahead and purchased the record and added it to my collection. Here is a quick pic:

Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the door, the show is an 18+ event.
Kyle Bolender:
Bloomington local, Kyle Bolender will be one of the openers tomorrow. Bolender released his full length album Bookshelf through Winspear in 2015. His music can be described as Alex-G esque, it has a Sunday-evening, warm and cozy feeling to it.
The Pills:
The band has released an EP through Winspear, called Real Cheese. The Pills contain the realest cheese on the block. I’m talking about some exquisite dairy products, no pun intended. The group is constantly rocking basement shows around campus and will carry that energy over to The Bishop tomorrow.

Grounded in 60’s folk and a myriad of psychedelic and shoegaze bands, Keeps is psychedelic dream rock band from Nashville, TN originally formed by Gusti Escalante and Robbie Jackson. They are currently recording a new record via Old Flame Records called Brief Spirit.

The LA punks, FIDLAR (aka F*** It Dog Life Is A Risk) have finally released their 2nd full-length record after two years of touring. Too is the follow up album to their self-titled LP, which sent FIDLAR from playing little bars to big indie rock/punk festivals such as Shaky Knees and Orion Fest. If you weren’t a fan of FIDLAR before, or if you had no idea who the hell they were, now is the time to jump on this brat-nosed, in your face, mosh your socks off, bandwagon.
The first album FIDLAR put out (back in 2013) introduced fans to the side of FIDLAR that partied their rumps off and abused many different kinds of substances. Too reveals the process of becoming sober after years of all that crazy ish. This theme of sobriety can be seen in the fifth track of album, titled “Sober.” Frontman Zac Carper sings,
“I figured out as I got older that life just sucks when you get sober. I figured out when I got sober that life just sucks when you get older.”
Other tracks that go along with the sober theme include "40Oz On Repeat", "Overdose", "Stupid Decisions", and "Bad Habits".
The recording of Too was a new process for FIDLAR because it was their first time that they hired a producer. They worked with producer Jay Joyce, who has worked with artists such as The Wallflowers, The Warren Brothers and Cage the Elephant. The addition of a producer brought a unique aspect of every song synching together on the LP.
One of the greatest features of this album is the music videos that come with it. FIDLAR has released a number of videos for songs such as "40oz On Repeat", "West Coast", "Drone", and "Leave Me Alone".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJy8VgB83OQ
So far "40oz On Repeat" has been the most popular of these videos, and it definitely deserves to be. The video features the members of FIDLAR (Carper, Elvis Kuehn, Max Kuehn, and Brandon Schwartzel) half making fun of and half paying homage to music videos they grew up too. Some of the impersonations include Oasis, the Beastie Boys, Britney Spears, Weezer, and Green Day. My personal favorite is their take on Britney’s “Hit Me Baby One More Time.”
Overall, Too is a record that could work for any moment in your day-to-day life. Whether you are pissed off, ready to party, or feeling a little angst, FIDLAR will be there to support you.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 CRASH!! White Reaper Does it Again. What an appropriate name for the newest White Reaper album, which was released just a few days ago on July 17th . Fans of White Reaper’s 2014 Debut EP White Reaper can finally feed their hunger with a full-length album of more short, rock-your-socks-off tunes. White Reaper, worked with PolyVinyl records, again, and also Royal Mountain Records to produce this album which was actually completed in one very busy week!
NPR Music describes this album perfectly with “The freewheeling White Reaper plays to classic rock ‘n’ roll ideals while trying to dissolve them in acid.” This statement can be backed up with White Reaper’s classic rock riffs, steady bass, wicked drum fills, and fuzzy vocals. White Reaper fans can also appreciate the keyboard that stood out in songs from their first EP like Half Bad or Ohh Yeah. The same catchy keys can be heard on the first track "Make Me Wanna Die," "I Don’t Think She Cares," "Pills," and many more.
White Reaper just performed at Forecastle with King Tuff. They also have a few upcoming concerts if you happen to be in the area! In the next few months they will be in Atlanta, Alabama, Omaha, Denver, and also at the Pygmalion Festival in Champaign, IL.
Overall, I believe the driving theme of this album is that music can and should be fun! This is an album that you must jump around to until you collapse on the floor from an overload of punk.

Memories were created this past Memorial Day weekend in the great urban Michigan city called Detroit. For three days all that could be heard from Hart Plaza, along the Detroit river was the constant pumping of bass. I’m sure Canada (right across the river) got its fill as well!
DAY 1
Saturday, May 23rd, my trusty sidekick, Kat Gaffka, and I drive down Jefferson Avenue only to see that the line to get into DEMF is stretched a mile down the Detroit River. Thanks to WIUX we were able to get into the Media/VIP entrance. The Media/VIP area was very posh. We walk into DEMF to see a multitude of colors everywhere. The outfits were on point (I felt slightly out of place with my Yeezus T). We find our way over to the Beatport stage to check out Polish duo Catz N Dogz followed by Boston duo Soul Clap. Both groups impacted my soul with the freshest house music the world has ever seen. Once Soul Clap finished their DJ set we quickly went over to the Red Bull Music Academy Stage to make sure we could get a solid spot for the legendary Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man. Octave One is playing at the stage before Method Man and they’ve got every one jumping around to their sweet beats. Finally, the time for Method Man has come. The Wu-Tang Clan “W’s” fly in the air the bass to the song “Ice Cream” blasts through the crowd. Method Man makes the audience part of the performance by getting everyone to sway their arms back in forth to “C.R.E.A.M.” and having everyone sing “Clan in Da Front.” His set ends with some violent moshing to “Bring Da Ruckus”, which I may or may have not participated in. Method Man finishes and leaves his fans very satisfied, thus ends my first day at DEMF. We head home to get prepared for an early start on Sunday.
DAY 2
Sunday, May 24th, the sidewalks along Jefferson Avenue were filled with flyers advertising after parties for DEMF that most likely ended at 7 a.m. that morning. Detroit seems like a ghost town at noon, with only a handful of people lined up to see the Ghostly International showcase presented by the Thump/Made in Detroit stage, which is actually our first destination for the day. Brooklyn Ambient artist and Ghostly International A&R, Heathered Pearls, kicks off the second day of DEMF. I had the pleasure to interview Heathered Pearls, aka Jakub Alexander, after his set. We had a lovely chat about Detroit and some of his upcoming projects. You can check out the interview with Jakub at the bottom of this article, along with a few links to his music/projects. He’s a pretty rad dude! I also found out that he grew up a mile away from me, so cool beans.
After the interview with Jakub, the crowd slowly started to grow in Hart Plaza. We went to check out super sweet chick named Gabi who was putting on a DJ set at the main stage. We actually met a 60 year old couple by the main stage who said they were huge fans of electronic music and had been coming to DEMF since its birth in the year 2000, just goes to show that this kind of music caters not only to young people but to everyone! Besides that lovely couple we talked to many other electronic music fans and asked them who they were most excited to see. A majority of the response were Disclouse, Dog Blood, DJ Snoopadelic, and Classixx. One young lady said she just came to the festival to hand out “free hugs.” God bless her soul.
As for the rest of the day, we saw Ghostly International’s Shigeto do a live set at the Thump/Made In Detroit stage, Oliver Dollar at Main Stage, and then concluded the day with People Under the Stairs and Hudson Mohawke at the Red Bull Music Academy Stage. The LA Hip-Hop group, People Under the Stairs was probably my favorite performance of the day. They kept the audience entertained with many shout outs to Detroit and expressed their profound love for the city.
DAY 3
Monday, May 25th, I start to feel the effects of a three-day rave. My body is weakening, but I must go on. The last day of DEMF was solely focused on having a successful interview with LA duo Classixx. While waiting for Classixx DJ set to start at the Main Stage, we watched the Jimmy Edgar and Machinedrum combo, Jets, do a DJ set at the Red Bull Music Academy stage. Once they had finished we quickly ran over to the Main Stage and got a spot right in the front to see Classixx. The LA Duo put on a great DJ set with some awesome Star Wars images floating on around on the screen behind them while they played. They kept the crowd groovin’ for a solid hour and a half. About an hour after their set had ended we met up with them in the Media area and had a nice chat about the festival, Detroit, and their future plans.
Before we concluded our DEMF experience we had to make a trip to the Underground stage. We made our way down to a completely dark cavern to see Matador do a live set. It took approximately 15 minutes to realize that I had gone deaf. I was completely content with it. Once Matador had finished that concluded our adventurous weekend at Hart Plaza. I personally have never been to an electronic music festival and I can honestly say that the event was a very positive experience in adding new artists to arsenal and for getting a view of one of the most popular aspects of the music industry. This year’s Detroit Electronic Music Festival was one of the biggest and best in years, everyone seemed to have very much enjoyed themselves. I know that I did!

Even if you’ve only dipped your toes in indie rock, you’ve most likely heard of the bands Cloud Nothings and Wavvess. Dylan Baldi (Cloud Nothings’ frontman) and Nathan Williams (Wavves’ frontman), two of lo-fi/indie punk’s biggest players, come together to rock our freakin’ minds. The LP No Life For Me is truly a treat for all Indie Rock fans out there.
According to SPIN, Williams and Baldi had met while on tour together some years ago. Williams, who as of lately has spent a lot of time producing, reached out to Baldi in the Spring of 2014 asking if he’d be down for a collaboration and a few weeks later they had already began.
Recorded and produced by LA’s Sweet Valley, aka Nathan Williams and brother Kynan Williams, and released by Ghost Ramp label, No Life For Me brings back warm fuzzy memories of the lo-fi beginnings of each artist.
Day 1 Wavves fans can appreciate the classic “ooohhhs”, flashback to early Wavves albums with Wavves (2008) and Wavvves (2009), in the third track of the LP “Come Down”. Cloud Nothings fans will get their fix from Baldi’s blood pumping screams in the fourth track “Hard To Find”, with a familiar sound to the tracks on Attack On Memory (2009). Bringing it all together, the title track “No Life For Me” shows the strengths of both Baldi and Williams, making it one of the best tracks off the LP.
The LP is currently streaming on bandcamp and can also be purchased on iTunes:

Music blog Consequence of Sound states, “Movement reflects the will of Detroit. No matter how many times the area can be pulled through the gutter, there is a sense of pride and hope that a resurgence is only some hard-work away.” The Detroit Electronic Movement Festival is one of the biggest music festivals held in the Detroit area. It started out as a free festival for anyone to come and enjoy electronic music. In its first years, back in the beginning of the 2000s, the festival brought in approximately 1.3 million people. The huge attendance rate ended up bringing in almost $90 million to the city of Detroit, and because of this economic boost they have continued the festival ever since.
This upcoming Memorial Day weekend (May 23 – 25), Detroit will be hosting its 15th DEMF. In past years big name artists such as Benny Benassi, Deadmau5, Moby, Girl Talk, Flying Lotus, and Bass Nectar have all joined many other DJs/artists to bring some craziness to this rave. The 2015 DEMF bill features more than 140 artists performing over three days, breaking the record for the festival's largest lineup. These artists come from all around the world with artists from Germany, Japan, various South American countries, and of course the United States. Popularartists that are performing include Disclosure, Matador, Catz ‘N Dogz, Soul Clap, Shigeto, and many more. There will also be a few bands and hip hop artists performing which are Danny Brown, ! ! !, Ataxia, and also a tag team of Snoop Dog, Skrillex, and Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man. So if you’ve been craving to be blinded by bright lights and feel your chest bump from some aggressive bass, then DEMF is for you my friend!
I wouldn’t call myself the biggest electronic music fan in the world, but it has always interested me. I’ve lived in the Detroit area for my whole life and have never actually been to Movement. I will be representing WIUX at this event and hope to chat with a couple artists and music fans about what makes DEMF such a great experience. By the end of this weekend I hope to walk away with a better understanding of the electronic movement that is happening all over the world.
If you are interested in going, a 3-Day pass is $150, and Single Day passes are $75. The festival is held along the Detroit River at Hart Plaza. You can get more information about the festival from their website below.
