Curation. It's always been what separates Kanye West from his peers. Well, if we're getting into this, I suppose you could also attribute West's success to unparalleled ambition and an ability to spot a trend years before it manifests itself in popular art. But, what has always carried his albums from "best of the year" consideration to being labeled "instant classics" is his knack for using other artists perfectly within the parameters of each distinct album. Numerous featured artists have delivered the best work of their career on West albums, looking squarely at you King L, Big Sean and Cyhi the Prynce . With this in mind, let's take a look at the best feature on each of Kanye West's six solo albums. Mos Def on "Two Words", The College Dropout Mos Def, following the "two word" structure, gets political, philosophical, and downright filthy on this gem from West's debut LP. Jay-Z on "Diamonds from Sierra Leone (Remix)", Late Registration He's not a business man, he's a business MAN! There are only a handful of Kanye tracks where he gets outdone by the featured artist, this is certainly the best example and arguably the best guest verse on any Kanye track. Dwele on "Flashing Lights", Graduation It would have been easy to go with T-Pain on "Good Life" and it would have been warranted to go with DJ Premier on "Everything I Am", but Dwele gets the nod here. His stand-out chorus on "Flashing Lights" sits beautifully on the orchestra's backing before the patented synth-work of Graduation bursts through. Kid Cudi on "Welcome To Heartbreak", 808s and Heartbreak On 808s second track Cudi's chorus sets the tone for West's most honest and vulnerable piece of work. These themes follow up on future Cudi-West collaborations "Gorgeous" and "Guilt Trip". Rick Ross on "Devil In A New Dress", My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Objectively Yeezy's strongest piece of work and the one in which his ability as a project's director shines through. From Nikki Minaj's ferocious verse on "Monster", to Justin Vernon's "Woods" re-work on "Lost In The World", to Pusha T's career revitalizing verse on "Runaway", the guest performances are as numerous as they are brilliant. Assassin on "I'm In It", Yeezus A relative unknown in the hip hop world at the time, the Jamaican dancehall artist delivers a fury-packed verse that immediately follows the first snares on the entire album. Though we're still unsure whether the O.J. reference was a (bizarre) ode to the Kardashian connection to his murder trial. Honorable Mention: Charlie Wilson on "Bound 2". In 2016 a Kanye guest verse is a rarity, but over the years Ye has blessed us with some classic verses as a featured artist. Here are some of the best ones ranging from the pink polo and backpack days to present day: Take this all in, and brace yourselves for The Life of Pablo. Stay tuned to wiux.org for extensive reviews of tomorrow's MSG premiere and TLOP.

I Love You, Honeybear, Father John Misty Music Videos of the Year: Jessica: Kevin: Assorted Great Things We Saw This Year: Jessica: And when I saw F.K.A Twigs in the press area at Lolla but was to nervous to take a picture. Kevin: Guilty Pleasures of the Year: Jessica: I mean I saw Death Cab twice within three months. Oh and this song. This was my guilty pleasure of the summer. ....and this one too. Kevin: Lil Wayne's verse on "Only" The Quan (and the utter confusion about what exactly it is. See :15-:17 below.) I can not tell you how many times I watched this clip of Makonnen belting out some out of key gold in this Noisey clip. Upwards of 200 times...at least. Any other thoughts? Jessica: 1. Paul McCartney is still the biggest rockstar in the world. 2. The tectonic plates of music journalism shifted this year and the Big One is gonna hit us in 2016. 3. 80s synth-pop has been slowly creeping back and it's gonna come back full force next year. Kevin: Fetty Wap is a fad, and is 2015's closest thing to Trinidad James. It was progressive house in 2013, trap in 2014, tropical house in 2015, 2016 will be the year for deep house and its emerge into the mainstream. I still can't believe that I like Drake now...shows what well handled beef can do for a rapper's career. Fingers crossed that in 2016 we will (finally) get albums from: Kanye, Frank, Jai Paul, and Jay Electronica. ..and don't you ever forget:
He really pulled a 180 on this one didn't he? I mean this is the same kid who, upon his introduction to the hip-hop world, relied on an arsenal of vapor-wave aesthetics and semi-serious slack rapping. The mashup of influences, ranging from Japanese culture, heavy drug use, and obsessions with brands like Arizona, Motorola and Polo, combined to produce truly weird material. Then you hear that his inclusion of 2001, 2002, 2003 in song titles because "they were the most emotional years," and quickly graze over his material, it can all come off as insubstantial and capitalizing off of fads. Sure it was fun, and songs like "Ginseng Strip 2002" and "Hurt" were as quotable as they were catchy but would the Sad Boys boss be around for more than a year? It's taken a few years, but the answer has emerged and it's a resounding yes. Why is the 19-year-old Swedish artist (not exactly a ton of them in the rap game) going to stick around? Well, for two reasons. The first reason's name is Yung Gud, and he's the best rap producer you likely haven't heard of. He's produced every bit of Lean's best material. "Kyoto", "Yoshi City", "Gatorade", "Ghosttown (feat. Travi$ Scott)", all of them find Yung Lean at his best, when his lyrics find their home in the unmistakably heavy atmosphere of Gud's beats. The second reason is that he is not afraid to take risks. How many rappers in today's landscape are confined to a DJ Mustard club sound and wouldn't hop on anything that isn't "hip-hop"? (Please don't actually try and count this because it will take hours and make you instantly more cynical.) This is where Lean excels, in the space of experimentation. His new single, "Hoover", showcases both of these strengths and re-asserts him into the hip-hop landscape in a strong way. Gud's brooding drums and Lean's braggadocios (and at times cynical) lyrics prove that the trap sound is far from being confined to the streets of Atlanta. It's not often that a trio of electronic acts takes over the Bishop and provides a twee, energetic soundtrack to your Tuesday night. November 3rd is not your average night in Bloomington, Indiana. The night's order: 1. Rollergirl: the funk spewing, Will Smith adoring, disco king. 2.Vista Kid Cruiser: Bloomingtonian groove boys 3. Skylar Spence: Internet God / Prom King. Location: The Bishop Price: $15 Here's a playlist to get you ready for the rodeo:
As we rolled through the drive-thru of a McDonald’s on an oppressively humid Bloomington afternoon, looks of excitement sprung onto Alex Fowler and Tyler Volk’s faces as they learned of the new Neon Indian single had just been released. Amidst the grinning that accompanied “Annie” playing over the car’s speakers and receiving our food, the two members of Vista Kid Cruiser mused about other artists they draw inspiration from. These influences ranged from the new A$AP Rocky album, to Graze, to modern pop artists. “What’s that one Kylie Minogue song,” Fowler asks as he looks to Volk in the back seat. “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head?” replies Volk. “Yes! I love that song.” “ I swear that badass pop chicks have more balls than guys singers right now.” Aside from talking about the state of modern pop music and one dollar chicken sandwiches, the most telling moment of our time together came when I posed a fairly simple question: Who are your counterparts in Bloomington? Volk and Fowler looked at each other a bit puzzled and both replied with the name of a local DJ. Why is this significant? For the same reason Vista Kid Cruiser is the most important band in Bloomington. There is no group like them. They are not trying to be the next Pavement, they don’t deafen you with an unrefined brand of noise rock, and in a market that is rich with “college bands,” Vista Kid Cruiser is thriving because of what they are not. They are not ironic. They are not trying too hard to adopt modern trends or aesthetics. They are not forcing anything. “Selling out is an old thing,” Fowler said. “It’s about making things more digestible for an audience. You can’t just make a six-and-a-half minute song that only you like. You need to be aware of what the listeners will go for.” Volk chimed in moments later adding, “All the best artists right now are proving weirder ideas over the past few decades can be put into a new context.” Volk’s point is supported within the opening seconds of Vista Kid Cruiser’s latest release on internet label Business Casual, Goodbye Sample City, where “Heart” features a Keith Sweat vocal sample that is pitched up and all of the 80’s R&B glory within it soars over a tactful combination of bass synths and breakneck hi-hats. So what exactly does their music sound like? If you were to try to put it into a genre you’d be most accurate placing it somewhere between vaporwave and experimental dance. It certainly does not take itself too seriously. It relies heavily on vocal samples from all across the musical spectrum. You can find anything from a Black Eyed Peas sample in “Vista Boys and Girls”, to an additional Sweat sample in “Soul”, and even a Jojo sample in an unreleased track they’ve been rolling out at recent performances. When examining what has made them one of the most popular acts in town, it would impossible to overlook the aspect of live performance. Their shows are an infectious, unadulterated good time that largely transcends the personal taste of the audience. The backdrop is generally the corner of a basement that has become damp with the heavy breath and body heat of an ungodly amount of college kids per square feet. Volk and Fowler station themselves behind synths with an occasional vocal produced by Fowler, while Rex Brown is positioned behind his Mac triggering samples and drums using Ableton Live. The live show hasn’t always this polished and Volk says that their first handful of shows, which found him and Fowler playing synths and singing on top of already completed tracks, were “whack” and “pretty ridiculous to be honest.” They both attribute a great deal of the live show’s acceleration to fellow IU student and Carmel, Indiana native Rex Brown being added into the mix. “First off he’s an extra person to help make songs realized,” said Fowler. “On top of that, he helps with the layering of percussion, which he is just so good at.” The group has taken their act out of dimly lit college houses and into venues across Bloomington this past year, playing shows at The Bishop and Rachael’s Café, as well as being the opening act at WIUX’s Culture Shock. They hope to take their show on the road at some stage in the near future. “I want to work on getting on as an opener for a short tour. Just to do that once in my life, to be able to say we did that,” Fowler explained as Volk nodded his head in agreement. “We need to get on a tour this spring break or next summer,” said Volk. He begins to laugh as he extends the pointer finger and pinky on his left hand and mimics answering a phone, “Hey Clams Casino! What’s up?” So what’s on the horizon for Vista Kid Cruiser? Besides working on their next release and hoping “every song on the release will give you shivers,” they hope to get released on a larger label each time they put out a record. Additionally, they aspire to craft a "great pop song that you could hear on the radio." For now, they will have to settle for being the most important band in Bloomington, because the city and its music scene have never encountered something quite like them.
It's starts. Soundcloud.com/kanyewest A photo posted by flame (@travisscott) on Oct 19, 2015 at 1:06pm PDT It all started with this Travi$ Scott Instagram post. When I clicked on the link just 10 minutes ago, the account had six followers. A verified Kanye account had only six followers... As I type this out, the account sits at over 5,000 followers. What these 5,000 followers are finding are the first batch of tracks released from Mr. West since "Only One" dropped on New Years Day. Now to the tracks themselves. "When I See It" finds West taking a vocal swing on his own production, which was first introduced to us as The Weeknd's ungodly smooth "Tell Your Friends" off of Beauty Behind The Madness . We find him somewhere between the melodic cooing found on "Devil in a New Dress" and the genre-birthing vocals plastered throughout 808s and Heartbreak. This track is another in which West takes a step away from the stark industrialism of Yeezus and follows through on the promise he made to embrace music while visiting Power 105. “[It’s gonna be] bars, songs, cookout music that just feels good … This album is embracing the music, joy. Being of service to the people. I just hope people like it and enjoy it.” The next song we find on this mysteriously revealed Soundcloud is a re-vamp of 808s standout "Say You Will". This time around we find a combination of Caroline Shaw (as a featured artist) and a chorus of towering voices that bring this track to another level of emotional potency. This track is understated and massive simultaneously. That is the power of Kanye West. The artwork used on both of these tracks is the same that was employed as promotional material for West's performance of 808s and Heartbreak last month at the Hollywood Bowl. And for now, it seems like artwork is not the only part of West's aesthetic that is trending back towards his 2008 masterpiece.
AND WE BACK AND WE BACK AND WE BACK AND WE BACK AHHHHHHHHHHH! So, it's been a minute...(or a few hundred thousand of them for that matter) but we're back with the first Single Watch of the school year! I'll keep this very brief because there are so many incredible pieces of music to share since the last edition. No analysis this week, just heaps of music. Check back next Thursday for the usual seven best tracks of the week. For now turn up the volume and enjoy this regurgitation of the summer's best tracks!
ESPN college football expert Heather Dinich hopped on The Tall Trio to chat about all things leading up to the season kicking off this Thursday night. Dinich gave us her pre-season Heisman pick, some dark horse teams who could make the playoff and an incredible anecdote about Bobby Knight. Check out the interview below and all the show's guests on their Soundcloud page and be sure to catch The Tall Trio every Monday night from 6:00-8:00 on WIUX 99.1 FM or wiux.org!
As he geared up for one of his largest performances to date, Josh Legg (aka Goldroom) sat down with WIUX at Mysteryland USA to discuss all that has led up to him securing a primetime set at one of the country's largest electronic music festivals. Through his lush chord progressions and his roots as a songwriter, Goldroom has become one of the most promising young song-crafters in the modern electronic landscape. His most recent EP, It's Like You Never Went Away, features a slew of calmative vocal appearances from the likes of Chela and George Maple that work perfectly over textures that are just downright beautiful. Check out the interview below as he details his exclusive release with Snapchat, his songwriting process, and his largest influences within electronic music.
This Memorial Day weekend Bethel, NY will play host to some of the hottest acts in electronic music as Mysteryland US takes place on the same grounds as historic 1969 Woodstock Festival. Decades later, guitars have been traded in for CDJs and flower headbands will be found at Kygo's set instead of Janis Joplin's. WIUX will be getting you ready for this one of a kind festival in its second U.S. edition with comprehensive coverage! Here are some acts that festival goers will not want to miss. Prodigy Turned Superstar The man was the first DJ to win all three major DJ competitions (DMC, ITF and Vestax), winning some as early as age 15. The man was Kanye West's first touring DJ. The man has over five million Soundcloud followers. So, I guess legend is more fitting of a title than man at this point for A-Trak. His unique blend of electronic and hip-hop, turntable skills and catalog of hits make the Fool's Gold boss a must see act. How Did He Get Here? How much progress can an artist make in a year? ILOVEMAKONNEN might be establishing a new, astonishingly impressive answer. For reference, raise your hand if in May of 2014 you had heard of ILOVEMAKONNEN. I would safely wager that 99.9% of our hands remained by our sides. Then these things happened: "I Don't Sell Molly No More" became a viral hit. Drake hopped on a remix of "Tuesday". Makonnen churned out a number of tracks with Atlanta's hottest producers such as Mike Will Made It, Sonny Digital and Metro Boomin. Now Makonnen is a household name in the hip-hop community and his off kilter style of rap is suddenly in style. His presence at electronic heavy lineups such as Mysterland's should show how far this ATL native has come in just a year's time. Set You Most Likely Stumbled Upon and Ended Up Staying For Despite releasing his wonderful Cloud City EP being released at the end of last year and scoring big with remixes of Flume & Chet Faker, Snakehips and most recently Alesso, Sweater Beats is still finding himself near the bottom of most festival billings. Don't expect him to be there for long. The NY based producer's penchant for soul-infused future bass make him one of the hottest up-and-comers in the current electronic landscape. Most Unique Live Show At just 22 years of age, it feels like Porter Robinson has left an impact on the genre that can not be overstated. At 18, Robinson released his utterly massive debut Spitfire (which crashed Beatport's servers upon release) and established himself as a force with tracks such as "Language" and "Spitfire". Robinson's latest album Worlds finds him crafting a much more vulnerable, heavily Japanese influenced product that maintains all of the melodic brilliance fans have become accustomed to. As far as his live show goes, Robinson has exclusively played his own tracks while providing live instrumentation and vocals on the Worlds Tour. Tie together the live aspects of the show with breathtaking visuals and you have more than a show, you have an experience. Porter Robinson's experience is one that can not be missed at Mysteryland. The King Diplo. The man is more than a DJ/producer, this man is a mogul. In the past year alone, he has collaborated with the likes of Madonna, Nikki Minaj, Sia, Ty Dolla $ign, scored a Billboard chart topping song via "Where Are U Now" (his and Skrillex's collaboration with Justin Bieber), and his Major Lazer cartoon has made its way on the airwaves of FX. All of this without even a mention that his label, Mad Decent, is thriving and boasts a roster that is full of electronic music's largest acts. Though he says that his focus will be shifted away from Diplo and on to Major Lazer, festival goers will be able to catch Wes Pentz in his most recognizable role as Diplo this Memorial Day Weekend. For more information on Mysteryland check out their website http://www.mysteryland.us/en/ Be sure to stay follow WIUX on Instagram (@WIUX991) this week as we will be giving away five pairs of non-camping tickets to Mysteryland!

Another creation from the Yours Truly x adidas original series, Songs from Scratch, another gem. The series that previously gave us the smoldering Shlohmo and Jeremih track "Bo Peep (Do U Right)" has now given us a bouncy, melodic collaboration from Baauer and Fetty Wap. Though you probably only know him from "Trap Queen" and his Kanye co-sign, Fetty Wap is showing why he has all the makings of being the next Future. On the production side, listeners can only hope this recent trend of hip-hop tracks from Baauer keeps up as each one has seemingly been better than the previous one. By continuing the narrative of death found on "Casimir Pulaski Day" off of 2005's exquisite Illinois, Sufjan Stevens has once again crafted a masterpiece with "Fourth of July". The track off of his new LP Carrie and Lowell finds Stevens contemplating his mortality as he watched his mother pass. The heart-wrenching lyrics placed over the delicate instrumental make for one of the decade's most emotive songs. Well, talk about a mood swing from the last track! DRINK MORE WATER 5 is here! Quick recap of ILOVEMAKONNEN. A year ago, absolutely no one had a clue who this guy was. Then the following happened: A Drake feature. More polished collaborations with Atlanta's hottest producers, Metro Boomin and Sonny Digital. A wildly underrated EP. That brings us to the present where Makonnen has established himself as one of the most unique and innovative young talents in hip-hop. Water 5, as most mixtapes do, have its highs ("Whip It (Remix) with Migos and Rich The Kid) and its lows ( the dreadful "Other Guys"). Is it worth a whole listen? Probably not. Is it worth picking through for the highlights? Definitely. Soul sample, a creeping melody, and some creative drum work make for an impressive output from Rascal. The track slows down and receives a soulful, pitched-down vocal before being thrust right back into the instrumental madness. If you somehow don't know this at this point, brace yourself for some bad news. Flume is leaving What So Not. That's painful to say. WSN's upcoming EP is the last that will feature production from Flume and today we received the first hint of what direction it'll take with "Gemini". If you're looking for the most innovative, visceral sounds in current electronic music look to TroyBoi. His flip of Father's "Wrist" gives the verses much needed energy while keeping the impossibly catchy (and repetitive) chorus intact. If an artist's logo has ever matched their sound, it's marshmello. "Want U 2" soars with it's high-end lead synth and hyperactive spirit.
From the smoldering new CYN track "something" to an Alchemist release that celebrated new Earl Sweatshirt and Action Bronson albums, here are the tracks that have been on repeat all week.
After hooking up on the second half of Acid Rap highlight "Pusha Man" (a.k.a."Paranoia"), the pairing of Nosaj Thing and Chance The Rapper have captured brilliance once again. This time around, Chance is the featured artist on Nosaj Thing's first single for his upcoming studio effort Fated. We find Chance away from the horns of the Social Experiment we've been accustomed to lately and he shines in a somber display of his versatility. The most underrated artist of this decade finally received a remix to one of his many gems this week. BenZel embarked on the ambitious task of re-constructing Jai Paul's "Str8 Outta Mumbai" and created a wildly smooth interpretation. For those unfamiliar with Jai Paul, think the Jai Electronica of modern R&B. Paul's anonymity and smoldering hot self titled EP have left fans clamoring for new material since it surfaced on the web in early 2013. If you haven't heard it, get your hands on it because it is in every sense of the word a masterpiece. The next Flying Lotus has arrived and he goes by the name of Sam Gellaitry. The bouncy chords and overall understated nature of his work is a refreshing commodity in an electronic music scene whose mainstream perception is still largely characterized by aimless, attention grabbing noise and over-aggression. No Tv No Radio gives "All Day" a treatment that at first is reminiscent of "All of the Lights (Interlude)" and all its beauty. The beauty is quickly flipped into a menacing trap beat that keeps nothing but the response to Mr. West's calls and Allan Kingdom's refrain. Jack Ü's record breaking self-titled EP was heavily reliant on its guest spots and the strength of their performances. Prime example:"Where Are Ü Now" and Justin Bieber's (surprisingly) flawless vocal. However, "Mind" found half of the super-duo, Skrillex, going back to his front man roots and belting out "IMMA SHOW YOU HOW TO LOVE AGAIN" on the pre-chorus. StéLouse gave the track a synth parade chorus that, and I don't say this lightly, feels every bit like a GANZ flip. However you classify this Hermitude remix of ODESZA's "Say My Name", it uses standard tropical house elements (see: soft female vocal and steel drums) in an imaginative, decidedly trap influenced way. Hermitude seems hungry to prove that a Flume remix won't be what defines their career. Diplo is one of the very few producers who could touch this blissful masterpiece and do it justice. While this one probably greets you in more of a club setting, the sincerity and undeniable catchiness of the vocal remains. Long live PC music.
Stephen Westrich, owner/operator of The Bishop, stopped by to talk about Pit Stop Music Festival 2015. Westrich gives all the details about this year's headliners, overlooked lineup gems, and the festival's future. Check out the week's best tracks ranging from Kanye's newest collaborator, Allan Kingdom, to Bloomington's own Sweater Disco. Instead of reading blurbs about each of the songs, use the time to check out the stream of Jack U's (Skrillex and Diplo) ongoing 24-hour marathon DJ set. The super-duo is going a full day strong live and direct from the Beatport headquarters to promote the release of their heavily anticipated EP which boasts an embarrassment of guest feature riches. Whether it be spots from AlunaGeorge, 2 Chainz, or Fly Boi Keno, every teased track to date has a great deal of promise. Watch live video from Beatport on www.twitch.tv With a February release promised, it only makes sense that the epic set will conclude with the release of the group's first formal project. Promotion and distribution in the internet-age are breeding incredible room for creativity and innovation. Artists are capitalizing on this and yielding results that are fabulously exciting for an audience that is more connected than ever.
With recent releases such as "Heart" and "Soul" and what seems like an exponentially expanding fan base, Vista Kid Cruiser has burst on to the scene in Bloomington. This trio has thrown together elements of vaporwave, electronica, and indie-pop to create a product that is as infectious as any of their contemporaries. While their Soundcloud page boasts thousands of plays, what can not be measured is how this group is helping usher in a new type of music to what has traditionally been an indie-rock centric scene in Bloomington. This is why we are proud to announce Vista Kid Cruiser as the first act at Culture Shock 2015! Check out some of their work below and be sure to check in with wiux.org as we will be announcing one act each day this week leading up to Saturday's Culture Shock Announcement Show. The show will kick off at 9:30 p.m. at the Blockhouse and will feature sets from members of the Mobile DJ Committee as the top three Culture Shock acts will be unveiled.
