P4K Day 1: Highlights
While we plan on posting more lengthy reviews after Pitchfork, we didn’t want to leave you hanging. Enjoy some highlights of Pitchfork 2012, Day One! Don’t forget to follow @WIUX for constant live tweeting, including photos!
Willis Earl Beal
- Gave a surprisingly energetic performance
- Sounded a lot like Tom Waits circa Swordfishtrombones
Olivia Tremor Control
- Gave a very energetic performance
- Showed they were very tight as a band even after their long hiatus
- Joined on stage by many auxiliary musicians
- (Including a trumpet player that looked like Santa)

- We are very happy to have them back
A$AP Rocky
- Despite the rain, Marijuana smoke still hung heavy in the air
- Joined on stage by the rest of A$AP Mob
- Fight broke out up front about half way through the performance, was broken up by Security and members of A$AP Mob
- Asked the crowd if they would mind if he partied with them afterwards. Asked if they would protect him if the party got out of hand.
- We really wish he did.
Big K.R.I.T.
- Gave a really strong performance
- Delivered a captivating show, even though we were waiting at another stage
- DJ did a great job of hyping up the crowd, and mostly used actual records
- A nice change of pace from most modern DJ’s who rely heavily on computers
- A rainbow formed over the stage.
- What does it mean?
Dirty Projectors
- Gave a nearly flawless performance
- Executed some of their most complex techniques perfectly
- Played mostly music from Bitte Orca and Swing Lo Magellan
- Played “Beautiful Mother” from Mount Wittenberg Orca
- We were especially impressed with the vocal techniques from this song.

- Dave Longstreth called out a friend in the audience
- A “7 foot giant named Pat”
Feist
- One of the strongest Friday night closing sets in recent memory
- Backed by a very strong band
- Played energetic versions of many of her songs
- We were a bit sad that she did not play 1234
- Played energetic versions of many of her songs
- Honestly, she’s just super cute
