WIUX’s annual Culture Shock festival was last week, April 13th, in the glorious Dunn Meadow. The turnout was fantastic, with students sprawled out across the field throughout the whole day. Pittsburgh-local band Merce Lemon had a great crowd, and an even better performance at the festival. After they killed it on stage, I snagged them for a bit to talk about their experiences as a band, personal opinions on music, and most importantly, fruit preferences.

Music seems to seep into the narrow cracks of everything we do, see, and feel. We associate almost every emotion, experience, and even people with songs and albums. Music is heard anywhere– from huge arenas by headline artists to whimsical jazz riffs found on city streets. The genres of music venture into a thousand different directions that intertwine and overlap until eventually become a big beautiful tangled mess. Because of this diversity, music has been undoubtedly generous, as there is at least something for everyone. However, this raises the question: What is classified as “good” music? And ultimately what defines music as "good"? David Hume, a famous English philosopher, argues that there is a “Standard of Taste” when it comes to music in terms of quality and goodness, and a particular criteria to determine which arts and artists are considered better than others. Hume asserts further that only a very small group of music listeners meet the criteria to judge based on this standard. These critics must maintain four qualities of judgment in order for their opinions to be taken earnestly.

If I had to describe rock and roll in one word, I'd use versatile. With such a deep history and so many subgenres, everyone can find at least one rock and roll song they like.

Let me set the scene, it’s 8:00 pm on a Friday night and John Mellencamp is playing Emens Auditorium in Muncie, IN. The lights go down, tension begins to build, a buzzing in the room commences, and on comes a screen in which The Fugitive Kind begins playing. A bold choice that I think Mellencamp set up perfectly. It was one of the most interesting opening acts I have ever witnessed, playing scenes from other classics, like Hud, Grapes of Wrath, The Misfits, and finally wrapping it up with the Marlon Brando classic A Streetcar Named Desire. It sucked me into this world of the wild west, the plights of the working man, and being a fugitive of the law and left the audience with a polite reminder to mind their manners. Then the sirens on the wings commenced and the band entered on to the stage with blazing force, kicking the show off with John Cockers.”

The long-awaited official Record Store Day list was finally released a few weeks ago, and I am so (SO!) excited about it. I have yet to experience an in-person Record Store Day shopping spree, but I think this might finally be the year I make the trip to some of my favorite local record stores. None of the releases for RSD are sold online, meaning you have to go out and support a store near you, which is one of the main things that I love about it. The list has over 400 titles that will be available in a number of formats, mostly including traditional LP and 7” vinyl. There are TONS of incredible releases on this list, and whether it is a newly remastered edition of a favorite classic album or a soundtrack to a movie that you’ve always loved, there is something for everyone. Below is a quick rundown of the event, and some of the releases that I’m most excited about. Be sure to get out and shop local this Record Store Day on April 20th, 2024!

In case you didn’t know, recently The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame released its 2024 nominees to be inducted this year. The list included: Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Eric B. & Rakim, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Jane’s Addiction, Kool & The Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinead O’Connor, Ozzy Osbourne, Sade, and A Tribe Called Quest. While this is an extensive, and frankly accomplished, list, only five groups get nominated. So, I’m going to give you my predictions for who I think will get voted in, as well as my opinion on who I would vote in.

On Friday, March 8th, 2024, I was able to attend the Strokes, NNAMDÏ, Beach Bunny, and Uwade concert for the Chicagoan congressional candidate Kina Collins on behalf of WIUX. The concert was half a birthday celebration for Collins, and half a political rally to encourage voter registration and explain Collin’s policies to the public. Local organizations and community leaders were MCs throughout the concert to introduce acts, encourage voter registration, and voice their support on behalf of their various wards of Chicago.

BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA - March 15, 2024
(03/21/24 4:23pm)
Here in southern Indiana, the second spring hits, windows are down and we are airing out the seasonal depression. After months of dreary weather and bleak midwinter, it feels like all hope is lost in the world, until that first day of spring and we find that this too, shall pass. Daffodils will bloom and the creatures that are college students will step outside of their humble abodes, and take in the sun. I know these few sunny days have me reaching for my spring playlist so I wanted to share a couple albums that perhaps you have heard of, or perhaps not. In the least, I hope you find at least one song to add to your spring playlist this year.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Max DiFrisco and Braeden Janes, two founders of the HumDrum Press, an independent record label started a few months ago in town. I was able to talk to them about their inspirations, recent releases, and how this project is different from any other student project.

I’ll be the first to admit that I have never really been a podcast girlie. There are few people that I want to have talk aimlessly in my ear for 45-minutes-to-an-hour, and I typically don’t have a long enough attention span to follow a long conversation, much less one that I can’t actively participate in. However, a new era of podcasts has been born in the last few years, and I have to say, it’s got an iron-chokehold on me. Influencers like Brittany Broski, Enya Umanzor, Emma Chamberlain, and more have all created podcasts I like to categorize as “hot girl podcasts.” First and foremost, being a ‘hot girl’ is 100% a mindset– all it takes is a good sense of humor, a carefree attitude, and a self-love mindset. You either get it, or you don’t. Below are some of my favorite ‘hot girl’ podcasts and episodes. If a music girlie like me can become a podcast convert, I think you can too. Check these out and see if you have a new favorite podcast!

Let's face it: No one likes waking up in the morning, and most people deeply resent the sound of their alarm clocks. However, there is a better way. Since middle school, my morning alarm has been ‘Heart Out’ by The 1975. While that song has now been forever ruined for me, it has been generally easier to wake up to a song I enjoy, rather than the painful stock sounds your phone supplies you with. Below is a tried and true list of songs I recommend changing your alarm to, because it definitely beats the iPhone stock sound.
