Culture Shock Interview – Fly Painted Feathers

By: Alex Peacock

In the celebration of this years Culture Shock just being right around the bend, we at WIUX Blog sat down with leading member Harlan Kelly of Fly Painted Feather to discuss his and the band’s upcoming appearance at the show.

Alex: Where was the band born?
Harlan: We were born in Madison, Indiana in my parents basement after and before soccer practice.
Alex: Ah, so young roots I see. What bands influenced your sound the most to where it is today?
Harlan: Canaveral, Native, Merchant Ships, Maps and Atlases.
Alex: For how fast paced you guys are that totally makes sense. What are your feelings on playing at Culture Shock?
Harlan: We have both decided to stop skateboarding this week so that we don’t break something and are unable to play.
Alex: Thats probably a smart idea, better safe than sorry! Is there a meaning behind the bands’ name?
Harlan: I like band names with verbs. It’s a good precedent. My sister has this painting hanging in our house that I really liked. It was of two cardinals. So we mashed those ideas together and spit our name.
Alex: I think to say the least its original and unique, especially now knowing it’s origins How much excitement did you have when you found out you’d be playing at Culture Shock?
Harlan: We were all in the car together when we found out. We all just yelled for awhile then went home and played Settlers of Catan. I am pretty sure Daniel won that game.
Alex: Whats your most favorite concert youve ever been to?
Harlan: Umm I know Daniel’s and mine was Mountain Asleep’s last show. It was at Skull Alley in Louisville Ky. Skull Alley was hallowed ground. We didn’t live in Louisville but borrowed my Dad’s car to go watch bands play there every chance we could get. We were interlopers but felt honored just to be allowed to observe it. Anyway that show was insane. Mountain Asleep built so much in Louisville and everyone there was so committed to making that show intensely energetic and emotional. I literally had no control of my body during the Xerxes set and Daniel got to scream into the mic during Mountain Asleep’s set and he still talks about it. We are super in love with all those dudes, I don’t know if they know it or not but we listen to Twins and Smile Medicine almost everyday.
