You Should Hear: He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister

If you like music that is uniquely fun, insanely catchy, and immensely full of life then He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister is the band for you.

With a sound that is difficult to classify into a single genre, the band’s music is an eclectic mix of folksy tunes that incorporates elements of indie rock, catchy pop, and subtle undertones of southern blues.

He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister recently performed a series of shows at the annual SXSW arts festival in Austin, TX and is currently on tour with another unique band—Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.  Having seen the band perform at The Bishop back in January, I can full-heartedly tell you that this band is going places.  I have honestly never seen a band perform with so much energy, life, and passion before in my life.  The members of He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister are true performers.  Nothing can testify to this any more brilliantly the fact that band member Lauren Brown tap-dances on a hi-hat and snare drum to create the band’s continuous rhythm.

The band’s front-runners—the brother-sister duo of Robert and Rachel Kolar—have other talents in the arts as well.  Rachel and the tap-dancing Lauren run their own theatre production company (called POSTFACT Productions) and Robert recently starred in an art-house film noir titled “Road to Nowhere”.

I haven’t listened to a He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister song that I didn’t like, but there are a few songs that definitely stand out.  “Escape Tonight”, a single released in 2011, features a series of handclapping rhythms that will have you tapping your feet and shaking your hips.  Rachel’s beautiful vocals can easily be compared with the talent of Ingrid Michaelson, Priscilla Ahn, and Norah Jones.

From their EP released in 2010, “Moonage Daydream” is a charming rendition of David Bowie’s original masterpiece.  The band covers the original with vintage swinging melodies similar to that of the gypsy sounding indie band Beirut.  “How’m I Gonna Get Back Home” is a catchy sing-along that perfectly blends the vocal abilities of Rob and Rachel with the instruments to create a bluesy and almost country-like sound.

He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister is in the process of creating a full-length album that will hopefully add to the band’s collection of eclectic tunes.  Check out the band’s website here.  Also, be sure to check out the live videos below!
