The Ultimate Guide to Crush-Worthy Celebrities
By: Sarah Silcox
I tend to obsess over things (and people) very easily. People are so interesting—especially characters in movies or people who have dedicated their lives to music. I’ve compiled the following list of crush-worthy men who are not only easy on the eyes but seem like all around awesome people as well.
1. Ryan Gosling
While many people site The Notebook as their favorite Ryan Gosling movie, I’m a fan of his more obscure movies like Drive, Blue Valentine, and Lars and the Real Girl. Not only can this guy act incredibly well, but he is also a member of the band Dead Man’s Bones (definitely check them out—they have a very eerie-cool sound) and he owns his own restaurant in Los Angeles called Tagine. His other major selling points are that he is incredibly charming and passionate about making a difference—he has supported causes like saving Darfur for years and even traveled to Chad to make a documentary on the refugees living there in 2005. He’s Canadian and has a tattoo of The Giving Tree. What’s not to love?
2. Gael García Bernal
After seeing him in Amores Perros (an amazing film by Mexican director Alejando González Iñárritu), I was inspired to see some of his other movies. He is primarily known for his acting in Latino films, but he is internationally recognized for his roles in movies like The Motorcycle Diaries, The Science of Sleep, Babel, and Mammoth. He was born in Mexico as the child of two theater actors and began his acting career as a teenager in telenovelas. Awesome points should be given to Gael for his ability to speak fluent Spanish, English, Portuguese, and French. Garcia and his close friend and fellow actor Diego Luna have worked on a number of films together and have since started their own production company called Canana Productions. Once the boyfriend of Natalie Portman (sigh), Gael is now married to Argentinian actress Dolores Fonzi and has two small children. If you have never seen one of his movies, you need to watch Amores Perros and The Science of Sleep—his eyes are literally the most entrancing things I have ever seen.
3. Aaron Paul
If you watch Breaking Bad, you know Aaron from his Emmy award-winning role as Jesse Pinkman. Originally from Boise, Idaho, Aaron is an incredible actor with a great personality off the screen. I once saw an interview of him saying that some of his favorite musical artists consist of Radiohead, MGMT, Warpaint, and Bob Dylan (can you say awesome taste in music?) I’m eager to see his portrayal of a recovering alcoholic in the film Smashed that was previewed at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Aaron got engaged a few months back to Lauren Parksekian—the co-founder of the Kind Campaign (a movement that works to heal the negative effects of girl on girl bullying). His smile and baby blue eyes are enough to make any girl swoon.
4. Aziz Ansari
Probably most famous for his role as the obnoxiously funny Tom Haverford on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, Aziz Ansari is also a stand-up comedian. As a matter of fact, he is going on tour this summer and will be stopping in Indy (yay!) and he will be performing at Bonarroo (double yay!). Hilariously funny, Aziz started his performing career in 2001 while attending business school at NYU. He has some hilarious stand-up videos about Kanye West and his little cousin Harris that are definitely worth checking out. If you are looking for even more ways to stay entertained, follow Aziz on Twitter @azizansari and check out his blog here.
5. Jason Schwartzman
You may know Jason Schwartzman as that guy who is in virtually every Wes Anderson film. Even though he usually plays weird and quirky characters, there is something about him that is very endearing. He is hilarious in a way that is incredibly awkward but somehow you can’t help but love him. In addition to being an actor from a famous family (his cousins are Sofia Coppola, Roman Coppola, and Nicolas Cage), Schwartzman has his own band called Coconut Records and was a drummer for the band Phantom Planet (cue theme song from The O.C.).
6. Devendra Banhart
Devendra Banhart is a singer-songwriter who was born in Texas, but raised in Venezuela until he was a teenager. He is also fairly well known for his visual artwork and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute until he dropped out to pursue is music career. Covered in tattoos and often hiding his handsome face behind a crazy amount of hair, Devendra is definitely a free spirit. His music is beautifully sweet and enough to make anyone smile. I love when he sings in Spanish—even though I have absolutely no idea what he is saying. Once the boyfriend of Natalie Portman (damn that girl has taste), Banhart is an avid skateboarder and has also had his drawings featured in a number of galleries all over the world.
7. John Legend
This man has a voice as sweet as honey. Winner of nine Grammy Awards, John Legend has a voice that is so special and unique that it’s hard to put it into words—listening to his music gives me a feeling of happiness in the pit of my stomach every time. In addition to his immense amount of musical talent, John is extremely passionate about partnering with non-profits to assist people living in extreme poverty. He even traveled to Ghana in 2007 where he started his “Show Me Campaign” that works towards improving the lives of people living in poverty.
8. Matthew Gray Gubler
You may recognize Matthew as Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s (another crush-worthy star) best friend in 500 Days of Summer or his role on Criminal Minds. He studied at NYU’s film school and he was previously a model for household names like Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, and American Eagle. His favorite director is Wes Anderson and he was able to land a small part in the film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou in 2004. Although he is known mostly for his acting, Gubler has also started to try his hand at directing and has a lot of artistic talent as well. You can check out his blog to see a number of his amazing drawings, paintings, photos, and journal entries here.
9. James Franco
Not only is James Franco a talented actor, but he also writes, directs, and produces too. He is currently teaching a class at NYU about transferring poetry into film. He wrote a book of short stories called Palo Alto: Stories (a very dark but interesting book about kids growing up in Palo Alto, CA). He hosted the Oscars in 2011. He volunteers for the Art of Elysium charity. Needless to say, James Franco is a hardcore over-achiever. If you have never seen him in Freaks and Geeks or Pineapple Express, you’d better get on that now. His younger brother Dave Franco is an up-in-coming star who is also adorable and seems a little more laid back.
10. Andrew Garfield
I have no doubt in my mind that Andrew Garfield is going to become a big star. He’s starring as Peter Parker in this summer’s The Amazing Spiderman, but you may already recognize him from films like The Social Network, Never Let Me Go, or Boy A. He is a dual citizen of the United States and Britain. His soft-spoken British voice will make your heart melt in Spike Jonze’s short film I’m Here that you can find here. He is currently dating Emma Stone (lucky girl!)
Honorable Mentions: Guilluime Canet (French actor who is married to Marion Cotillard), Charlie Day (Charlie from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Scott Harrison (the founder of the non-profit organization charity:water), Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Sameer Gadhia (the lead singer of the band Young the Giant).
